Claudeは急成長し計算資源を必要としていた

　直接の理由は、かなり実務的で単純だ。Anthropicには、Claudeを支えるための計算資源が必要だったのだ。

　背景には、Claudeのユーザーが急拡大したことが挙げられる。Forbes Japanが報じたSensor Towerのデータによると、AIアプリの世界ダウンロード数に占めるClaudeのシェアは、2025年は各四半期で1％程度だったが、2026年第2四半期時点では14％まで伸びたという。さらに、Claudeの月間アクティブユーザー数は前年同期比627％増だったとされる。

　利用者が増えれば、それだけ計算資源も必要になる。AIは画面の中で言葉を返してくれる存在に見えるが、その裏側では膨大な計算が走っている。高性能なAIを学習させ、多くのユーザーに安定して提供するには、巨大なデータセンターが欠かせない。さらにいえば、Claudeは元から時間あたり／週あたりの利用量にやや厳しめの制限をかけており、計算資源の保有量には難を抱えていた。

　今回、Anthropicは、SpaceXのColossus 1データセンターが持つ300メガワット超、22万基以上のNVIDIA GPUにアクセスできる契約を月額12.5億ドル（約2000億円）で結んだ。その結果、Claude Codeの5時間あたりの利用上限はPro、Max、Team、Enterprise向けで2倍となり、Pro／Maxアカウントのピーク時制限も撤廃された。さらにClaude OpusモデルのAPIレート制限も引き上げられたという。

SpaceXは計算資源を貸しつつ主導権も残している

　ただし、これはSpaceXが計算資源を長期的に手放したという話ではない。

　Reutersなどが報じた内容によると、マスクはX上で、「SpaceXはColossusを何年も貸し出すと約束したわけではない」と説明している。契約は180日間のリースであり、双方が90日前に通知すれば解約できるという。

　つまり、SpaceXはAnthropicに計算資源を提供するが、自社側で計算資源が必要になれば、将来的に使い方を見直せる余地を残しているのだ。ここに、インフラを持つ企業の強さがある。AIモデルを作る企業は、計算資源を必要とする。一方で、巨大なデータセンターを持つ企業は、その資源を貸す側に回れる。しかも契約条件によっては、自分たちの都合に合わせて柔軟に動けるのだ。

　今回の短期契約のニュースは、AI競争において、インフラを持つ側の交渉力がどれほど大きいかを示している。

AI競争はチャット画面の外へ広がっている

　AIをめぐる競争は、コンピューターの中だけで起きているわけではない。どのAIが賢いのか。どのAIが使いやすいのか。私たちはつい、画面に表示される答えや評判だけを見てしまう。

　しかし、大規模なAIサービスを動かすには巨大なデータセンターが必要になる。そこでは大量のGPUが動き、電力が使われ、機器を冷やす設備も必要になる。当然データセンターを建てられるだけの広大な土地を用意することとなる。AIはソフトウェアであると同時に、巨大な物理インフラの上で成り立つ産業でもあるのだ。

　しかも、そのインフラは無限に増やせるわけではない。AIブームに伴って各地でデータセンターの建設ラッシュが起きる一方、電力や水の消費、騒音、環境負荷を理由に反対する地域も出ている。我々の生活にとっても、無縁ではない。身近なところでいえば、PCの値段が昨年から跳ね上がったのも、こうした建設ラッシュの影響だ。

　AIの需要は増え続け、性能の向上に合わせて求められる資源の量も増える。だが、データセンターはすぐには建たない。GPUも電力も土地も、無限にあるわけではない。そうなると、すでに計算インフラを持っている企業の価値は相対的に高まっていく。

　SpaceXがAnthropicに計算資源を圧倒的に有利な条件で貸し出したことは、AI競争において、インフラを持つ側の交渉力が高まっていることを示している。

　AI競争は、「どのAIが賢いか」だけでなく、「誰がそのAIを動かし続けられるのか」をめぐる争いへと広がっている。AnthropicとSpaceXの契約は、それを如実に示す象徴的な出来事だった。
